North Carolina State Archives

Private Collections

Notable Private Collections

Private collections within the State Archives of North Carolina are distinguished for their diversity and historical significance. Few state archives nationwide hold such extensive private papers. Combined with public records, maps, audiovisual materials, and organization records, these collections form an invaluable resource for studying North Carolina's rich history at regional and national levels.

The Archives accept papers and records from individuals, families, businesses, and other entities. Their holdings span from the colonial era through the American Revolution, antebellum, Civil War, Reconstruction, and into the modern era. Materials include letters, diaries, speeches, sermons, songs, poems, photographs, ledgers, legal and financial documents, newspaper clippings, and more.

Access to Private Collections

The State Archives is uniquely legislated to collect and provide access to private papers alongside vital public records. Since the early 20th century, these collections have grown, offering an exceptional window into North Carolina's history and culture.

All private collection materials must be used in the Search Room, where knowledgeable staff provide full research assistance.
